It surely is a commentary on the time that we’re living in that we scientists have to create alternative accounts just to post facts; just to have that freedom to do so without the concern that we’re going to lose our jobs, or our reputations are going to be tarnished. It really does say a lot about the world that were living in now, and I hope that we learn from this and that it never happens again.”-Adrienne of @AltCAStateParks
These are interesting times in our country and the world. It appears that more than ever before we are facing a polarization of our nation’s people and beliefs. My feeling is that this current version of the USA has been waiting under the surface for a long time. With the rise of Trump to the presidency of the united states of america, a new world view, drastically different than the previous administration, has come into the spotlight. More than ever before our nation expresses an Alter Ego that some have been waiting a long time for, and has left many more feeling unsettled both within and outside of our borders.
In today’s episode, I am very excited to bring a unique perspective to the current political climate. In the wake of the Trump administrations crackdown on the Environmental Protection Agency (or the EPA’s) sharing of scientific data regarding climate change… scientists, environmentalists, and citizens concerned with honesty and transparency have acted in response by creating a wave of “Alt” twitter accounts. These “Alt” accounts cover a range of organizations such as the NSF, EPA, National Parks, State Parks, and many more science based government agencies demanding freedom of scientific information to the public, and sometimes garner up to 4 times more followers than the original agencies boast.
To be clear, the abbreviation “Alt” (short for alternative) has had a lot of press lately, both good and bad. It has been used for an extremist/white nationalist group that goes by the name “Alt Right”. Then there’s trumps campaign manager and now U.S. Counselor to the President, Kellyanne Conway, who’s outrageous use of the phrase, “Alternative Facts” was coined to describe demonstrable falsehoods.
I’m a scientist, and although I don’t want to be a martyr for my cause, I’m willing to fight for science and for the planet. I think that it’s worth it and we need to have people that are willing to put themselves on the line for what this is, which is the greater good. Politics, as we’ve seen, is able to stop science. We can’t have that.”-Adrienne of @AltCAStateParks
So Alter Ego… what is it? Well it’s not about ego or ego trip. It’s really about exploring the different personalities and characteristics of who we are, internally. Not just in our interpersonal communications with others, but our intRA-personal communication with the individual persons that really add up to be us, who we are! When we are able to explore for them and express them we create such a rich life of greater happiness, greater contributions to ourself, to our families, to others, to our organizations, to our causes, and missions.
